Meet the Maker: Local Timber with a Story to Tell

No.5

There’s something grand about loading a log basket with wood that hasn't travelled hundreds of miles to get to you, in a way, just how it should be. Here's Mike - bringing locally sourced firewood to The Village Larder, with a story that starts right here in our local rolling landscape.

Working as a local tree surgeon, Mike looks after trees and understands that for safety, health or other practical reasons, a tree needs to come down. But that doesn't mean its useful life has to end there, oh no! Rather than letting good timber go to waste, they make use of the wood, turning trees that need to be felled into firewood that can go on to warm our homes.

Local wood, ready for your fire

Mike offers sacks of logs and bulk bags of firewood (the sacks you can buy and collect from The Larder, the bulk bags you can order here, making it easier to choose the quantity that suits your home, your log burner and the time of year.

The wood is locally sourced and dried, ready for responsible burning. Whether you're topping up the log store for cosy evenings or stocking up with a larger bulk bag, you're buying something with a real connection to the landscape around us.

And there's more to their approach than simply producing firewood. The wood chips created during their work are returned to its source for composting, helping put something back into the space they work and making better use of the materials that come from the job.

It's a practical, thoughtful way of working: trees are removed when they need to be, useful timber gets another life, and less of what comes from the process goes to waste - lovely.

Why this belongs at The Village Larder

We want to champion the people behind the produce we sell. It's not just about putting another bag of logs on the shelf; it's about knowing where those logs came from, who prepared them and the work that went into getting them ready for your fire, and like a lot of our produce, it's blinkin' hard work.

Mike brings together local skills, responsible tree work and a useful product that many of us rely on through the colder months for warmth and comfort. So, if you're looking for firewood, why not start closer to home?

Choose locally sourced logs, support the people working in our landscape, and make your next fire a little more local.
